Fish and Chips
Last night we had fish n chips for the first time in ages. I forgot how good they taste. A good dollop of tomato sauce from heinz on the side of the plate made the experience so special. I now am sure i have a raised cholesterol level! The problem here is that it is far far cheaper to have fish and chips rather than a salad! A small punnet of salad (extra small if you compare it to American sizes) costs $5.95 compared to $1.80 for fish and chips. Plus there are fish and chip shops everywhere here compared to salads mainly being sold in supermarkets or Subway (Eat Fresh!)
It amazes me that the government is trying to get people to eat healthy but how can we when healthy food costs so much more. Plus we dont have that good assortment of salads. Unlike some countries that have a good selection in 'wholefoods warehouse' we dont get that great luxury. I want a 'wholefoods Warehouse' over here, it will just rake the money in.
It was the British that have given us our Fish and Chips tradition but do Americans and Canadians have fish and chip shops?

We used to have a chain back in the 70's called Arthur Treacher's Fish and chips. I'm not sure if they are still in business. We still have (in our area) Long John Silver's Seafood Shops that serve an American version of fish and chips, but they are not very popular. BTW, Arthur Treachers used to serve it with a vinegar for the chips, an uncommon taste in America. I was surprised when you mentioned Heinz! (Especially since I am a Pennsylvania boy [the Heinz family did their thing in Pittsburgh])
On a side note, Kev: if you hurry you can get here for the [maybe] big snow. Depending upon conditions they are talking 6-12 inches for our area Tuesday into Wednesday. (More in other parts.) If it happens it will be the biggest for us so far this winter. It is the time, though.
Long John Silvers is 'sorta' a fish n chips chain. But we don't really call them 'fish n chips'. And we certainly don't serve them in newspaper.
We are much more a dead cow eatin' nation than a fish eatin' nation.
There are several restaurants in Southwest Florida that serve good local fish and (probably not local) chips, but they're not strictly "fish 'n chips" shops.
I've been reading how if the current trend in seafood consumption continues, there won't be many fish left to eat. We'll be left with just "chips n' chips" shops. :(
Start with your very own veggie/herb garden, even if it's with window planters.
If you want to try something really good, get some potatoes, and slice them in small wedges. Pour your favorite spices all over them (don't worry about "over-spicing" them too much). Then deep fry them in hot oil for about 5 or 6 minutes (The recommended time in 4 minutes, but that's never enough, unless your oil is the temperature of nuclear waste). Most of the excess spice will have come off in the oil, and you have lightly seasoned home-cooked potato wedges that are much better than "chips" that are gotten from a restaurant. And if you use cooking oil that is lower in saturated fat, you're eating healthier!
We only have commercialized fish and chips establishments here in the US. Occasionally in seaside communities you can find an actual fish and chips shop, but they are not nearly as plentiful or authentic as real British style fish and chips stands one might find in London for example.
Ironically, our healthfood is cheap and we have salads a-plenty everywhere, but most Americans still eat like crap.
We have one chain called Nordsee ("North Sea") that serves fish and chips, but that's not their key product. They're serving other seafood snacks as well.
However, I had very fancy fish and chips in New York last time. :-)
Are you gonna be a fat little kiwi again! I was tickled pink when you said that. I had the giggles for a few minutes. Always nice to have a smile during the day!
I could not imagine Fish & chips without a serve of salad, especially in summer...Is it inexspensive to buy your own salad vegetables & DIY?...We Aussies love our salad...:)
Ooo, by the way. I had THE best fish and chips EVER when I was in London. Well, actually it was at a pub in Windsor. Very hidden but well recommended for their food.
Seriously awesome fish n chips. And the mushy peas were incredible- and I HATE peas!
Here in North Carolina, we have both Long John Silver's and Captain D's.
Long John Silver's
Captain D's Seafood
We have places that serves fish and chips...
Canada. yes. USA, not like the Brits do. Brind F&C's seem to taste different and US does not get it right.
