Giftcards!

One thing that i noticed when i was in America was the popularity of GIFTCARDS. Every store i went in seemed to have them lurking on their counters. Everywhere from Macy's, Eckerds, Duane Reades, Mcdonalds, Saks 5th Avenue, Abercrombie, American Eagle and even Starbucks!! The designs on some of then were a masterpiece on their own.

Now these must be a American phenomenon. Today i trolled through our shops in NZ and i found only 2 shops out of many that sold Giftcards. One was The Warehouse (www.thewarehouse.co.nz) and New World supermarket (www.newworld.co.nz) . There were plenty of places that sold gift vouchers but no cards!

You know, i even bought a giftcard in Saks 5th Avenue for i think $5 and they giftwrapped the card in a stylish box with a lid and greeting card and then put the whole box in a fancy bag with rope handles....i love it!

I'm not sure now, how I should begin my comments, O Divine One. Having heard, or more correctly having read, my mission from on high by means of the very voice (or should I say, keyboard) of your Deity-ship, I am most humbled. Besides which I really liked your orders of what I was to do. Perhaps his NZ heavenliness would like to volunteer to be the next cub that I grab in the butt?

[LMAO! -- and waiting to be struck dead (but not by his favorite NZ deity).]

On to other things... gift cards! We can get them in the grocery stores for ANYTHING! I just read an article that the laws here have been changed so that most will no longer lose their value over time. This kind of information was not being made known to the [American] public and a lot of people were not using them for a long period. Then when they used them they discovered that it was then only worth a fraction of its original value. The "gift Master Cards" are, btw, the worst because the giver pays an extra fee to buy them and then the user sometimes has to pay an extra fee for using them. So a $50US card might cost the giver $60US but only buy $40US of merchandise. Merchants love these things because many people never use them and it is "gravy cash" for the merchant.

Giftwrapping of giftcards... very posh indeed!

Glad you saw a show on Broadway. Seeing a musical was a smart choice.

Glad to finally see you! I think gift cards are very American. It means you no longer have to put any thought or time (or wrapping) into your gift. You just run to a store, buy six gift cards and hand them out, all the while complaining that you have no time to get anything done. I hate it. I really like to think about the gifts I give and always try to find something special. I hate getting gift cards, too. To me it says "I really didn't want to waste a lot of time and effort in thinking of something special for you..." Then I have to go out and pick out something for myself. If you are getting me a gift card, give it to me with something small, and memorable.

Look at the hottie from NZ!
Great to hear you had a blast in NYC. That place is just magical to me.
Americans are big on the Giftcard. We're a "fast" nation here. lol. It gets to be annoying at times.

Here in Germany giftcards are also not really a big thing. It seems to be an American tradition indeed.

I'm glad you had a great time.
