Reusable-bags
The last couple of days have seen almost spring like weather with warm sunny days and cooler frosty nights. Spring is just around the corner. 1st September is officially the first day of spring. However we will still have a month or two of unsettled weather before summer sets in during November.
This afternoon i went into work for a couple of hours and then decided to take the afternoon off and enjoy the weather so i took a gentle stroll around the city before heading off to Starbucks. It may sound quite boring to some people but it really recharges my batteries just going for a stroll and watching other people going about their business.
Tonight we went out to Borders bookstore to have a look at the latest magazines on their shelves. They have a good selection of international magazines including Men's Health UK, Men's Health USA and Men's Health Australia. I was also surprised to see a Men's Vogue which i think was American. From there we went to KFC in the mall. It's late night shopping here until 9pm and the mall was packed out.
Have you noticed how it is getting fashionable to buy re-usable shopping bags from local stores. It saves the environment by reducing plastic bag consumption. Now here in NZ they charge you a dollar to buy one where i could get my plastic bags for FREE everytime. I'm not sure why they dont sell the re-usable bags for 10 or 20c because it is the supermarket that will save money in the long run by not having to issue as many plastic bags. I think the cost thing has ignited me today because i saw the sports shop in the mall selling re-usable bags for $1.99 each. Now that's getting too expensive.
I understand that Tesco's in the UK sells their re-usable bags for 10p plus if it breaks you get a replacement for free. Now that's FAIR.

Americans are too "throw-away" for reusable bags. I've seen it tried, but, at least in the hinterland, it has not caught on at all. Part of the reason might be the cost as you point out.
Tecso also take back your old free bags for recycling and give you a discout for them.
I belong to a generation that used to go shopping WITH a shopping bag taken from home. But that became too... old-fashioned, going around with a bag, if you could get as many bags as you'd like to in any supermarket...
Now you go to any beach and what do you come across with everywhere? Yeah, pieces of old plastic bags... Smart, huh?...
In Canada we reuse everything. We actually can get fined if we do not recycle properly.
Howdy Kev. Like Lemuel and the other guys wrote, reusable bags are a hard sell here. But I see A&P supermarkets doing it, and it seems to be working for them. I guess the bags have to be both stylish and reasonably priced.
Thanks stud, for commenting on my recent blog post. Great words of wisdom as always.
A lot of people I know reuse the bags they get from stores like WalMart & Target for other uses. I do the same. If you can reuse the bag for something else, why not? :)
Esp. when that "I'm not a plastic bag" bag came out, re-usable bags are hot now!
hey kevin, thanks for your message.
i also think it's fun to just walk around and relax. i mean, not everyday is a circus day. sometimes, it's just about regular stuff and the best part of it is if you can find pleasure in doing it.
i also saw some peeps around here using the reusable bags. i want one of them! hehe. i actually felt guilty when i saw someone coz i used a lot of plastic bags that time.
Hope you're enjoying the lovely CHC weather this weekend. I even got a chance to get a start on the tan this afternoon! We should have a blogger meet up at the pub sometime. ;-)
